Department of Energy Redesign
This case study details the successful redesign of the Department of Energy (DOE) website, addressing significant challenges in user-friendliness, content density, and navigation identified through heuristic evaluation and initial user testing. Our process involved developing a proto-persona, refining information architecture via card sorting and a new sitemap, and iterating through lo-fi and hi-fi prototypes.
Key solutions included simplifying the navigation bar into consolidated categories like "Topics" and "News," creating a centralized "Energy Savings Hub," and ensuring visual consistency and accessibility compliance. A final usability test confirmed a significant improvement, with the success rate for the key user task of finding the Energy Saver Guide increasing from 80% to 100%. The redesign achieved a clean, intuitive, and highly functional browsing experience grounded in user needs.
